MABISSU DANCE

Mabbissu word comes from the prefix ma get additional meaning to dance bissu. While bissu derived from the word bessi, which means clean or pure and strong. They called bissu because no menstruation, no bleeding, or sacred. It said it did not bleed because bissu immune to a sharp weapon, unable to be penetrated by a dagger, machete or a hot lead. Hence, in every ritual ceremony, the bissu always show their magic in the form of dance called Dance Mabbissu or bissu. Mabissu is a custom show which has a dance and any extreme attractions.Mabissu dance comes from pangkajene kepulauan or often called Pangkep,south Sulawesi.So,for everybody who is looking for an art show, Mabissu could be a good choice to be chosen.

Ma’bissu dance is always  held in Pangkep regency every harvest season is coming,it is approximate on February to March.This dance is done by six dancer,named “Bissu”. Indeed,when this dance is shown,all these Bissu do some unusual attractions,means that in dancing this dance there is a great strength is showed by them.

Mabbisu is usually exhibited by the main bissu six people led by chairman bissu in the area. Sixth bissu is dressed like a woman with golden-colored clothing and dagger at his waist. After that, with a rhythmic drum beat accompanied by typical, they chanted the mantra strains Rilangi To mythic language (ancient language of the Bugis) while dancing around Arajangnge, the sacred objects and ancestral spirits believed to be the place beristihat. In front Arajangnge it has prepared a variety of offerings from traditional Bugis pastries, fruits, chickens and cows and buffalo heads as offerings to their ancestors.

When the rhythm of drums grew louder and faster, the movement of these Bissu more slowly and began to "trans" or lose consciousness. At that time, began to demonstrate Bissu maggiri movement. They let go a long dagger tucked waist, then stuck it into the palm of the hand, stomach and throat. The aim is to test whether ancestral spirits / gods of magic had penetrated into them. If they are immune, it means Bissu and spirit that possessed her trusted to give thanks. Conversely, if badik it penetrate and injure their bodies, meaning that the spirit possessing her is weak or even not at all possessed by ancestral spirits.

The local society believe that when those Bissu is in trance,their body was penetrated by the soul of the forefather ,so they are dancing unconsciously.The local society also believe that there is a weak and a strong soul of the forefather,it means when a Bissu penetrated by a strong soul then it’s gonna be good but on the other hand,if he is penetrated by a weak soul then the Bissu will be unfortunate.Besides dancing unconsciously,all these Bissu is beginning  to show a great and even unbelievable attractions,named “Maggiri”.When “Maggiri” is being shown,this is a situation where the audience just realize that why those dancer is called “bissu” which means strong and supernatural.

Privileges Dance Mabbisu

The culmination of this Mabbisu is nagiri'i or body piercing them with badik, so the dance is also called Maggiri. At this maggiri movement exhibited, visitors will be amazed and astonished, dumbfounded watching the Bissu it pierced the palm of their hands and neck with badik the pointed and sharp, but do not leave any scars, though pressed many times with a vengeance. However, if there is a requirement in this dance are not met, then badik will pierce their bodies.

So,the conclution is Mabissu is a very appealing  dance,it’s a so different dance and I ensure you won’t find the dance which is good and appealing like this in the world. And hopefully this paper can be useful.
